If you’re under the impression that Christkindlmarket is for tourists and suburbanite mom dates, you’re wrong. There are ways of visiting the tent-packed market at Daley Plaza, in its 19th year in Chicago, that can be romantic if you play your cards right.
Since temperatures are firmly at winter status, a daytime date is the warmest plan. Meet at the market (in front of the large Christmas tree, perhaps?) to peruse a few booths after you’ve purchased yourselves a ceramic boot of glühwein, or slightly sour red mulled wine.
After a boot or two of glühwein, and managing to avoid the ornament hut on the northeast corner, walk two blocks north to Pastoral for a European-inspired lunch of gourmet sandwiches and salads. Yelp reviewers admire the “cheese connoisseur” working behind the counter, the “Sinfully Healthy” sandwich (roasted turkey, Fromager D’Affinois cheese, mango chutney, whole grain Dijon mustard and field greens, $7.99).
The market runs now through Christmas Eve, and if you or your date are into sitting on Santa’s lap and telling him your Christmas desires, you can do so Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
