Fall is my absolutely favorite season in Chicago.
A native Floridian, I’ve had enough humid summers to last a lifetime, so one of the bonuses of living in the Midwest is the presence of seasons. I will never live down the day that I said to my fiance, probably sounding like an eight-year-old looking up at her amused dad, “So that’s why they call it fall,” as crunchy leaves fell to the ground from the trees around us.
Florida is a very different place, people.
So then, let’s celebrate the arrival of fall this weekend with a few of these recommended date ideas. Wrap a scarf around yourself and that cutie of yours.
- Visit the new Honey Butter Fried Chicken in Avondale, which everyone’s been talking about this week. Daily Candy wrote a cute poem about it, including vital information such as the availability of free parking, sinks in the dining room (for greasy chicken hands) and spiked iced tea. Oh, and the patio looks absolutely gorgeous.
- Riot Fest is happening today through Sunday in Humboldt Park. Make a date out one day by starting at Flying Saucer for brunch nearby (cash only). Bring a book – there’ll be a wait.
- Adorable new ice cream shop Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams opens in Lakeview tomorrow. Attend their opening party tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. and get free samples and a cheeky promotional poster. There are a slew of restaurants along Southport to have dinner at beforehand (or after, if you’re like that dessert-loving girl from Remember Me).
- This is the last weekend of the City of Chicago’s Summer Dance at Grant Park. Tonight, learn the Plena Libre, or the bachata on Sunday. Tomorrow night’s dance is TBD.
